Day 365 - Completion

Almost 400 photos later, I've completed my photo-a-day assignment for an entire year. Beginning 2010 with images from the San Diego Wild Animal Park, I'm ending it with a sheep yawning. Anticlimactic? Yeah, probably. Let's see if 2011 is more exciting . . .

Day 364 - Trees

In Stuart Little, the title character pays seventy-six cents for a genuine birch bark canoe. Birch park peels off the tree in sheets, is waterproof, and can be used to write on.

Day 363 - Winter

See what I mean about curly willow?

Day 362 - Winter

It looks a little creepy now, but when this birdhouse was first hung in my parents' oak tree, it was a cute novelty.

Day 361 - Winter

Curly willow looks better without leaves than with.

Day 360 - Winter

I like this as a holiday card.

Day 359 - Christmas

It wasn't a completely white Christmas, but this house sparrow was enjoying breakfast.

Day 358 - Holiday LIghts

This was one of the most unique houses.

Day 357 - Holiday Lights

Electric bills? Just wondering . . .

Day 356 - Holiday Lights

After the original Shrek, none of the resulting three sequels matched up, but this was a fun lawn display.

Day 355 - Holiday Lights

This was one of the favorite houses on the entire outing.

Day 354 - Holiday Lights

Can't have too much neon . . .

Day 353 - Holiday Lights

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite holiday movies, and Jack Skellington is one of the most unlikely Christmas heroes.

Day 352 - Holiday Lights

Every year, three whole blocks in Torrance decorate the entire neighborhood in lights and lawn displays.

Day 351 - Pasttimes

Dad does the Jumble every day in the paper.

Day 350 - Pfannekuchen

Which literally means "pan" and "cakes" in German, they're more commonly known as crêpes. My father's been making them since I was a child, and they're every bit as good as they were then.

Day 349 - Sunset

Same angle, same location, six weeks apart.

Day 348 - People I Dig

The older they get, the more I see their resemblances to their family.

Day 347 - People I Dig

Art and Marnette, and their three children Lilly, Cora, and Grant, are among my dearest and closest friends.

Day 346 - L.A. Auto Show

The hood ornament on this Rolls Royce retracts down into the car when it reaches a certain speed.

Right.

Day 345 - L.A. Auto Show

H-Mac was judging cars by the ones she looked best in . . . this Mercedes convertible was the best.

Day 344 - L.A. Auto Show

Mini had the best displays of any automaker at the entire show.

Day 343 - L.A. Auto Show

Steve, on the other hand, "lovity-loves" (his words, not mine) the Auto Show, and jumped at the chance to try this simulator.

Day 342 - L.A. Auto Show

I'm not a car guy, never have been, never will be, so I don't get as excited about the L.A. Auto Show as others do. But the advance press days mark the beginning of the holiday season at work.

Day 334 - Charlotte

Peter and Fiona's daughter Charlotte is fearless and unbelievably strong. Go get 'em, kiddo.

Day 333 - Berries

Peter's wife Fiona served this delicious berry tart for dessert.

Day 332 - Brussels Sprouts

Apparently, overcooking results in the release of glucosinate sinigrin, which is the unpleasant sulphur smell associated with brussels sprouts. So roast or steam, but never overcook.

Day 331 - Peas

"And peas on earth, goodwill towards me." Oh, wait. Sorry, wrong holiday.

Day 330 - Cranberries

I used my friend Andy's recipe for fresh cranberry sauce.

Day 329 - International Holidays

There was something nostalgic about sharing Thanksgiving with an English family . . .

Day 328 - International Holidays

My good friend Peter invited me to his home to share in a combination American Thanksgiving / English Christmas celebration with him and his family.

Day 327 - Golf

Where'd it go, Dad?

Day 326 - Golf

Off the tee, Dad ain't pretty, but he knows where it's going . . .

Day 325 - Golf

Bump n' run, Dad, bump n' run . . .

Day 324 - Golf

My dad's short game isn't the best, but it's certainly better than mine.

Day 323 - Golf

Keith's weight is a little forward, but he still hit the crap out of the ball.

Day 322 - Golf

In his retirement, my father has embraced the game of golf, often playing two to three times a week. Keith is an infrequent participant, but a willing one whenever possible.

Day 321 - Rose

My mother transplanted this rose bush from California all the way to Maryland nearly 20 years ago, and to this day, it still blooms.

Day 320 - Sunset

I lived here for over eight years, and no matter the season, it was always beautiful.

Day 319 - Arlington National Cemetery

Day 318 - Arlington National Cemetery

The changing of the guard is one of the most impressive sights in all of Washington.

Day 317 - Arlington National Cemetery

"Walking the mat," 21 steps one way, pausing for 21 seconds, then 21 seconds the other way. 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, rain or shine.

Day 316 - Arlington National Cemetery

It was no accident that the Tomb is located with a view overlooking the entire city of Washington

Day 315 - Arlington National Cemetery

The Sentinel's Creed

My dedication to this sacred duty
is total and whole-hearted.
In the responsibility bestowed on me
never will I falter.
And with dignity and perseverance
my standard will remain perfection.
Through the years of diligence and praise
and the discomfort of the elements,
I will walk my tour in humble reverence
to the best of my ability.
It is he who commands the respect I protect,
his bravery that made us so proud.
Surrounded by well meaning crowds by day,
alone in the thoughtful peace of night,
this soldier will in honored glory rest
under my eternal vigilance.

Day 314 - Arlington National Cemetery

"Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God"

Day 313 - Arlington National Cemetery

I was at Arlington with well over 100 members of the Society of the Honor Guard - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a group of former and current Tomb Guards, of which I'm proud to be an honorary member. We were in the cemetery before it was open to the public for a private wreath and rose laying ceremony at the Tomb.

Day 312 - Arlington National Cemetery

I spent a lot of time in Arlington during 2003 and 2004, but never saw it in the fall. It will always be a special place for me . . .

Day 311 - Urban BBQ

One of Urban's signature items are "Soul Rolls," beef brisket, caramelized onions, and cheese stuffed into egg roll wrappers and deep fried. Horribly fattening, but oh so good.

Day 310 - Urban BBQ

My pulled pork and beef brisket.

Day 309 - Urban BBQ

And the chicken, which had an unbelievably delicious smoky glaze.
